Pace of Play on the Course

We would like to remind all golfers of the importance of maintaining a good pace of play to provide everyone with an enjoyable experience at the course.

It's often a combination of little things not done that wind up contributing to slow play and on-course traffic jams. Here are some tips for making sure your PACE OF PLAY is as brisk as it should be. Remember: PACE OF PLAY isn't about rushing your shots; it's about playing efficiently on the course, being READY to take your shot when it's your turn,

  • Other than in tournament play ’Honors’ on the tee and green use up valuable time. READY GOLF means that the player with the honors should be READY to HIT FIRST. If the player with the honors isn't ready, then someone else should hit first.

  • READY GOLF also means putting CONTINUOUSLY if the ball is not in someone else's line. Unless you are playing in a tournament, it is not necessary to follow the “furthest from the pin” rule. When on the Green be prepared to putt, line up your putt BEFORE it is your turn, and if you are not in someone else's line, putt out immediately instead of marking.

  • Maintain the proper GAP. Use the groups ahead of you and behind you to gauge your pace. If the group in front of you is pulling away - putting a full hole distance between them and your group - you need to speed up. If there is no group in front of you holding you up, but you are holding up those behind you, either speed up or allow the trailing group to play through.

  • Never play in a CARAVAN, moving in a group from ball to ball. Walk to your ball as soon as possible, so that you can select your club and think about the shot and take practice swings in ADVANCE, not when it is your turn.

  • When driving a cart, drop off your partner first, your partner should select more than one club, if necessary, to be READY to make a shot. Do not wait with your partner, drive to your own ball, select your club, stand at the ball and get READY to play.

  • If you believe your ball may be lost, play a ‘provisional’. When another player’s ball is lost, go to your ball and hit your shot FIRST and then help look for the lost ball.

  • After putting, don't stand around chatting and writing down scores. Immediately CLEAR THE GREEN so the group behind can play their shots.
